Summary

The case of the Company of Mary, founded by St. G. Lestonnac at the beginning of the 1600's, is a singular example of canonical transformation of women's religious life. The foundress was able to include the educational goal as constitutive of the Order, thus assuming the apostolate as an integral part of the identity of her Religious in the restrictive context of the Counter Reformation. Between the 1800 and 1900's, when politics were signed by the process of secularization, the Company matured a transformation from being a cloistered Order to becoming a centralized Religious Congregation with a Superior General.
